The Cheapest Medicine
Gratitude doesn't change what you see. It changes how clearly you see it. — Steve Martin – Vision-Keeper, Dream Coach, and Grandfather
The Cheapest Medicine
If a pharmaceutical company could patent gratitude, it would be the most valuable drug on earth.
Better sleep.
Lower stress markers.
Stronger relationships.
Reduced inflammation.
A heart that beats in a healthier rhythm.
No copay.
No side effects.
The only catch is that it cannot be swallowed — it must be practiced.
Three things, named, before sleep.
That’s the dose.
The reason your doctor doesn’t prescribe it is that there’s no profit in a cure you administer yourself, for free, in the dark, in your own bed, by simply turning the focus ring of your attention toward what is already good.
My grandpa always said
“The smaller the thing you can be thankful for, the sharper your eyes have gotten. Anybody can be grateful for a trophy.”
One Simple Action You Can Take Right Now
Tonight before sleep, name three things — out loud or written. Make them small. Small means you’re training your eyes to see, not just to celebrate the obvious.
Insights from my Advisory Board
Marcus Aurelius: Would point to the opening of his Meditations — pages spent thanking, one by one, those who shaped him — as proof a Stoic begins not with complaint but with debt acknowledged.
